This is a welded steel skimmer, approximately 4 inches in diameter with a 18 inch long x 1/4 inch diameter steel handle. The skimmer is made from sturdy .098 inch plate steel and has a unique serrated edge to allow the maximum recovery of molten metal while skimming the dross. The handle has a convenient hooked end for hanging.
A skimmer is used to remove the dross (impurities that float to the top) from the surface of the molten metal in a crucible. Dross needs to be removed just prior to pouring. The goal is to remove as much of it while retaining the clean molten metal. This skimmer has a scalloped edge and a perforated surface to allow the trapped molten metal to run back into the melt.
Molten metal is very hot and must be handled with extreme care using proper safety equipment. The heat radiated from the surface of the molten metal can be enough to cause burns to unprotected skin even without direct contact. Safety goggles, face shield, gloves and fully flame & splash proof leather clothing and shoes are a must.
This skimmer must be completely dry before use. Even the slightest dampness can cause violent steam bursts or explosions upon contact with molten metal.
