Sheetmetal For Gingery "Li'l Bertha" Style Furnace

Sheetmetal

Description:

This is the basic sheetmetal package for making a electric shop furnace as described in the book by David Gingery entitled "Li'l Bertha, a Compact Electric Resistance Shop Furnace"

The package includes 4 sheetmetal parts: a Base, a Body, a Top, and an Inner Form. All parts are nicely rolled and riveted with stainless steel rivets. The metal is zinc plated for rust resistance.

The Base sheetmetal has a diameter of 9" and forms a base 2-1/4" tall. There are 14 equally spaced holes used for threading the bailing wire thru. It also has 3 groups of 2 holes 3/8" diameter for attaching the legs. The joint is riveted with 2 stainless steel rivets.

The Body has an outside diameter of 9" and is 4-1/4" tall. It has 2 ea 5/8" holes for the power feedthrus. The part is riveted together with 3 stainless steel rivets.

The Top is identical to the base, except it doesn't have leg holes. You will have to drill your own holes for the handles since there are so many different styles of handles available.

The inner form part is needed temporarily in the making of the furnace to act as an inner wall to hold the refractory cement in place until it cures. This piece is 4-1/4" tall and has an overlapped section so the part can collapse to remove it after casting. There is a 1/2" flange on the inside to aid in holding the form in position as described in the "Li'l Bertha" book.
